Engagement with PS, State Department for Wildlife on Infrastructure Projects

In July, LCA joined fellow CEOs under the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA) in engaging the Principal Secretary, State Department for Wildlife, to address the urgent implications of the recent freeze in U.S. foreign funding to Kenyan conservancies.

Key Concerns Raised:

  • The withdrawal of support poses a serious threat to the sustainability of conservation programs.

  • Communities living alongside wildlife, already grappling with Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC), risk losing vital livelihood support and infrastructure services.

Outcome of the Engagement:

  • CEOs representing regional conservancy associations proposed priority infrastructure projects for potential Government of Kenya support.

  • LCA presented a list of priority projects identified by Laikipia’s community conservancies.

  • The meeting included a review of previous infrastructure projects implemented under the State Department for Wildlife.

  • Discussions set the groundwork for future collaboration and potential government intervention to cushion conservancies from funding shortfalls.

This engagement signals a proactive step toward securing alternative support for conservation infrastructure and sustaining community-based wildlife management across Kenya.
