How Can Tourism Go Beyond A Game Drive? We Worked With Naibung'a Upper, Shulmai Conservancies and Steri Tours, To Build Community-Owned Products
Shulmai and Naibung’a Upper community conservancies are exploring how their landscapes and cultural assets can support new conservation-linked income opportunities through tourism.
Our partnership with Steri Tours supported a tourism audit and co-creation exercise in August where the communities met to examine potential products including game drives, nature walks, hiking, bush experiences, stargazing and cultural tourism as unexplored tourism offerings.
This exercise moved beyond identifying attractions to considering what would be required to make each experience viable, from trained local guides and visitor safety to transport, security and environmental safeguards.
The two conservancies will launch their toursim this month, after developing tourism products that are community-owned, commercially realistic and aligned with conservation. This training also equipped the conservancies with structures to ensure that a transparent revenue-sharing arrangement is in place, to ensure that tourism revenues create tangible benefits for both communities and the land.
