Laikipia County Steering Group Reviews 2025 Short Rains Assessment

The Laikipia County Steering Group (CSG) convened on 22nd January 2026 to review the findings of the 2025 October–November–December short rains assessment. The meeting brought together representatives from key county departments and agencies, including the Kenya Meteorological Department, Agriculture, Livestock, Water, Health and Nutrition, Education, and Children Services.

The primary objective of the meeting was to assess the county’s prevailing situation following the short rains and to evaluate sector-specific impacts on livelihoods, food security, and essential services.

The Kenya Meteorological Department presented an overview of rainfall performance during the October–December season, highlighting distribution patterns and their implications for agricultural productivity, pasture regeneration, water availability, and household resilience.

Sector representatives provided updates on ongoing interventions, emerging risks, and priority needs within their respective areas. Discussions covered crop performance, livestock body conditions, water access for both domestic and livestock use, nutrition trends, and the welfare of children and learners across the county. Participants also reflected on service delivery gaps and the vulnerabilities facing communities in different parts of Laikipia.

A key outcome of the meeting was the recognition of the need for strengthened inter-sectoral coordination, improved early warning information sharing, and timely, evidence-based response mechanisms. Sector leads proposed targeted intervention measures to address identified challenges and mitigate potential impacts on vulnerable populations.
