LCA Member Visit to Segera Conservancy

We conducted a member visit to Segera Conservancy, gaining valuable insights into a range of innovative and community-driven conservation initiatives that are contributing to both ecological restoration and livelihood improvement.

Segera Conservancy is implementing the following initiatives;

  1. Tree Nursery Propagation Program:

    Segera Conservancy is implementing the “Tree of Life Reforestation Initiative,” which focuses on large-scale tree propagation. The program conducts intensive training for community women on proper tree propagation techniques. After training, the women actively participate in planting trees within the conservancy, contributing to an ambitious target of growing three million trees by 2030.

  1. All-Women Anti-Poaching Ranger Training Program:

    Under the guidance of Daniel Mander, Segera has launched an all-women ranger training program, where selected women from the community undergo rigorous professional ranger training. This initiative strengthens inclusive conservation and builds local capacity in wildlife protection, with potential for knowledge sharing across other conservancies upon request.

  2. Sports Conservation Initiative:

    Segera Conservancy also runs a football club known as “Ndovu ni Kuu,” which competes with other well-known clubs in the country. Through the Sports Conservation Activity, the club is used as a platform to promote conservation awareness and educate the community on the importance of protecting natural resources.

In addition, the conservancy is planning to establish a learning center that will offer practical skills training such as tree nursery propagation and drone operations, among other conservation-related skills.

A key takeaway for us is the value of learning and adapting from member conservancies. Segera’s tree propagation model, for example, presents a scalable idea that can be replicated across other conservancies, reducing dependence on external sources of seedlings—especially during large-scale tree planting activities.
