Loisaba Conservancy Welcomes White Rhinos

A Landmark for Conservation in Kenya

In a historic milestone, Loisaba Conservancy has officially welcomed white rhinos, becoming the 12th sanctuary in Kenya to host these iconic animals. This successful relocation is part of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Strategic Plan (2024–2028) and the White Rhino Conservation and Management Action Plan, which aim to expand rhino habitats and secure their long-term survival.

The Relocation Success

A total of 10 white rhinos have now been successfully relocated to Loisaba Conservancy, marking a historic conservation achievement. The operation saw two males and two females translocated from Meru National Park, while the remaining rhinos were sourced from Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

This delicate mission was carried out under the leadership of Dr. Lekolool and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) team, working in close partnership with Loisaba Conservancy.

By bringing rhinos to Loisaba, Kenya is not only expanding habitats but also:

  • Creating healthier breeding conditions

  • Reducing the risks of over-concentration in existing sanctuaries

  • Strengthening the long-term resilience of rhino populations

Kenya’s White Rhino Comeback

Kenya’s rhino conservation efforts continue to be a global success story. As of 2024, the country hosts 1,041 white rhinos, a number that has steadily grown thanks to bold strategies like this relocation.

A Future of Shared Prosperity

For Loisaba and the surrounding communities, welcoming rhinos means more than conservation. It strengthens tourism, creates opportunities for local livelihoods, and reinforces the powerful link between wildlife protection and community well-being.
