We continued with the member visits initiative, an annual activity that provides an opportunity for the secretariat and Members to align on priorities, update Members on our annual workplan and identify areas of collaboration and design a road map towards unlocking the same.
In the month of February, we visited Loirien conservancy where discussions focused on Loirien’s priorities and achievements, key among them efforts towards digitalizing data collection processes, removal of invasive species and holistic livestock practices.
Our visit with Ol Jogi Conservancy brought to the fore the need to engage the Water Regulatory Authority and other relevant government bodies such as the National Drought Management Authority on water security in Laikipia given drying rivers, upstream water obstruction, uncontrolled borehole drilling and the need to measure groundwater levels. Another key discussion point was the need to build the capacity of members on statutory requirements to ensure compliance.
We also visited Ole Naishu Conservancy, where we were inspired by efforts to strengthen community relations, human-wildlife conflict mitigation through fencing, as well as a planned restoration and deforestation control on approximately 5,000 acres in the conservancy.
