Site Level Assessment of Governance and Equity SAGE Bringing Practical Change To Conservancies

In partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association, we conducted a Site-level Assessment of Governance and Equity - SAGE at Shulumai Community Conservancy, providing an opportunity for different actor groups to examine how governance, participation, equity and accountability are working within the conservancy. The process brought together different perspectives to identify existing strengths, gaps and priority areas for institutional strengthening.

The SAGE process is also helping shift the focus from assessment scores to what is actually changing within conservancies. Through subsequent joint field engagements at Naibung'a Lower, Naibung'a Central and Lekurruki conservancies, we documented practical examples of improved participation, inclusive leadership, community engagement and governance, alongside the experiences of leaders and community members.

As we focus on priority actions from these conservancies, this tool is useful in helping shape institutional support and governance across the landscape.
