In collaboration with Alex Chidakel, representing both the University of Florida and Life Through Wildlife, LCA’s Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Department conducted a household-level survey across Shulmai, Maiyanat, and Naibunga Upper Conservancies.
Purpose of the Survey:
The survey aimed to develop a Governance Dashboard that reflects community perspectives on:
Trust in leadership
Participation in decision-making
Equity and benefit-sharing
Rights and empowerment
Attitudes toward wildlife
Livelihoods and employment
Implementation Approach:
The exercise kicked off with a training for enumerators, followed by ongoing data collection using KOBO Toolbox. Interviews were conducted at the household level, as well as with conservancy managers and chairpersons.

The initiative builds on successful governance assessments conducted in Kalama and Westgate Conservancies (Samburu), and seeks to provide a deeper understanding of how governance and benefits are experienced by local communities.
Broader Economic Insights:
The survey also explores comparative economic data between community and private conservancies, and between wildlife and livestock-based economies. It covers:
Revenue generation
Employment opportunities
Infrastructure investment
Long-term land use trends
This collaborative exercise is a key step toward inclusive, evidence-based conservation planning and will help communities make more informed decisions about their future.
