Invasive species remain one of the biggest threats to rangelands, biodiversity, and community livelihoods. Across Laikipia, the spread of Opuntia stricta has degraded grazing lands and reduced the quality of natural habitats. Through this project, in partnership with the Mayianat community, we aim to restore grazing areas and natural vegetation by uprooting the invasive Opuntia stricta and reseeding the cleared sites with native grasses.
Progress in Mayianat Conservancy
30 acres cleared out of the 600 -acre target.
60% of affected land now showing signs of natural recovery.
Grazing areas and vegetation are visibly regenerating, creating better conditions for livestock and wildlife.
Mapping data shows 27.3% of the target area remains affected.

Next Steps in Mayianat
Ongoing monitoring to prevent regrowth.
Mobilizing more resources and technical expertise for expansion.
Strengthening community involvement to sustain long-term control.
Ongoing Efforts in Shulmai Conservancy
Mapping and removal work currently underway, targeting 480 acres.
Initial mapping shows 34.5% of the conservancy is affected by Opuntia stricta.
