Securing Critical Ecologically Significant Areas (CESAs) Across Northern Kenya

Updated: Nov 7, 2025

LCA participated in the Critical Ecologically Significant Areas (CESAs) Workshop held in Isiolo County, bringing together conservation practitioners and experts from Laikipia, Isiolo, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru, and Tana River counties.

The workshop, part of a broader effort to enhance the protection and management of Northern Kenya’s vital ecosystems, focused on mapping, profiling, and documenting CESAs that form critical ecological corridors and biodiversity hotspots.

Key discussions centered on harmonizing data collection tools, aligning conservation priorities, and strengthening coordination among partners working within these shared landscapes.

By promoting integrated planning, the workshop sought to build a unified regional approach to ecosystem protection, connectivity, and resilience.

LCA contributed field perspectives and data from Laikipia’s ongoing conservation programs, ensuring that the county’s experiences in landscape restoration, community engagement, and rangeland management are reflected in regional frameworks.

The CESA initiative aims to secure the natural lifelines that sustain both people and wildlife, fostering collaboration across counties and conservation actors. Through such partnerships, LCA continues to champion data-driven, cross-boundary conservation planning for a more connected and resilient Northern Kenya.
