LCA, in partnership with the Wyss Academy for Nature, conducted practical training sessions in Lekurruki and Ilngwesi Community Conservancies. The focus was to demonstrate how semi-circular bunds and trenches restore degraded rangelands and promote pasture regeneration.
Community Collaboration
A total of 60 community diggers from the two conservancies took part in the restoration work. Over eight days, they successfully established and seeded 2,000 semi-circular bunds, marking an important step toward rangeland recovery.
This exercise is part of the Landscape Restoration Project, which aims to scale up proven methods for reviving degraded lands across Laikipia North. The semi-circular bunds are designed to capture rainfall, reduce soil erosion, and support natural regeneration of grasses.
Next Steps
Expand similar restoration efforts to the 11 remaining community lands in Laikipia North.
Increase the scale of bund construction and seeding to cover more degraded areas.
Strengthen community participation and ownership for long-term sustainability.
Monitor progress using the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM).
