SMART Application Training & Opuntia Mapping

Updated: Aug 5, 2025

In July, LCA continued to strengthen conservancy capacity in data collection, management, and application through two key activities under the LCA Data Hub initiative.

Ground-Truthing for Opuntia Mapping in Maiyanat Conservancy

A team conducted a ground-truthing exercise at Maiyanat Conservancy, mapping the distribution of the invasive Opuntia species. The objective was to collect accurate GPS coordinates in areas identified for removal, validating and refining existing remote sensing maps.

Ground-truthing is a vital step in confirming the accuracy of spatial data, ensuring that Opuntia removal efforts are targeted and effective. The verified data will support long-term planning and monitoring of invasive species management within the conservancy.

SMART Training for Conservancy Managers, wardens and data operators Team

LCA also launched day one of a SMART application training for conservancy managers, wardens, and data operators. The training is designed to equip teams with practical skills in data collection, uploading, syncing, and using conservation data for informed decision-making.

Participants were introduced to the SMART Mobile App, including how to design and customize data models tailored to their conservancy’s specific needs. Once complete, conservancies will be better positioned to own and operate their own data systems, improving transparency, response, and adaptive management.

These efforts mark a significant step toward locally owned, evidence-based conservation in the Laikipia landscape.
