In partnership with ICRAF, LCA officially launched the Soil and Vegetation Cover Sampling Exercise in April 2025 as part of the LCA Landscape Restoration Carbon Project.

Objective:
To establish baseline soil health data that will inform rangeland restoration strategies and support evidence-based land management across Laikipia’s conservancies.
Sampling Activities Conducted:
Water Infiltration Testing
Soil Sampling
Transect Walks
Sampling by Phase:
Phase | Period | Conservancies Covered | Clusters Sampled |
Phase 1 | April – May | Mugie (5), Mukutan (5), Sosian (3), Ol Maisor (3) | 16 |
Phase 2 | 15 May – 6 June | Suyian (3), Pinguan (1), Loisaba (3), Ol Malo (1), Kipepeo (2), Mpala (5) | 15 |
Phase 3 | 24 June – 16 July | Ol Jogi (6), El Karama (3), Segera (3), Ol Pejeta (4) | 16 |
Overall Progress:
Total Conservancies Sampled: 13
Total Clusters Sampled: 47
Next Steps:
Roll out sampling across the remaining LCA member conservancies to complete the landscape baseline.
This exercise is critical in tracking ecological recovery, enhancing restoration planning, and positioning Laikipia conservancies for future climate finance opportunities.
